Certainly, tunes like "The Rain Song", "Over The Hills And Far Away" and "No Quarter" showcase vocalist, Plant's whispers/to/a/scream range, Jones' tasteful use of emerging electronic keyboard technologies and Page's expressive use of multiple guitar tracks to create an orchestral ambience. But, on the whole, there is more of an emphasis on the rhythmatic inter-play between Page, Jones and Bonham from the James Brown derived funk of "The Crunge" and the reggeaish dance breaks of "D'yer Mak'er" to the menacing eastern modalities of "Dancing Days" and the rocking revups of "The Song Remains The Same" and "The Ocean". They were quick to embrace and experiment with synthesizers, (the synth-bloated "Carouselambra" and the slick AOR hit "All My Love"), adds a certain majestic tone to the heavy-hitting opener, "In the Evening," and gives a rollicking good-time feel to "South Bound Suarez." Plant's howl and Page's bluesy guitars are in fine form on "I'm Gonna Crawl" and the lilting "Fool in the Rain" recalls the pretty numbers from their early career. CODA - UK re-mastered reissue of 1982 album, packaged in a limited edition miniature LP gatefold sleeve. 8 tracks. Warner. 2003. Classics, notably "Poor Tom," "Ozone Baby," and "Wearing and Tearing." The latter, one of three outtakes from the In Through the Out Door sessions, features a particularly high-octane blend of stripped-down, grungy rock & roll and is considered their response to the then-burgeoning punk movement. With so little studio material available, live versions of "I Can't Quit You Babe" and "We're Gonna Groove" from 1970 flesh out the set; the former features some blistering playing. PHYSICAL GRAFFITI - is the bands Holy Grail. Always cited as Robert Plant's favorite (with his all-time favorite Kashmir), the band ushers in the second half of the seventies with creative subtlety and flair. PHYSICAL GRAFFITI is the last great Zeppelin title recorded before the influences of the day (synthesizers, disco) ended Zeppelins reign as Kings of loud and sexy blues- metal. Playfully experimenting with new sounds, the band blended Middle Eastern themes, folk-stylings, heavy blues, and deeply impassioned rock riffs into a double LP set that sounds as if they were still enjoying their place in the rock pantheon. As swirling and adventurous as this collection is, there are some tracks so tightly fused ? so ultra-Zeppelinesque that it is tempting to name this as a #1 or #2 must have. /Trample Underfoot/ and /Custard Pie/ alone are almost worth the double LP price tag. Do not get it wrong, this album rocks but with more texture and cohesion. Page, Plant, Jones and Bonham have never sounded so together as a complete whole. This is their defining masterpiece.
